Award-winning Public Relations Strategic Planning and Execution

I am a professionally accredited public relations counselor with nearly three decades of diverse communications experience.

Shortly after launching my public relations consulting firm, I created an award-winning, strategic communications plan that secured a $1.3 million federal contract for the National Drowning Prevention Alliance in response to a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission RFQ. Leading a team of 15 independent consultants, I implemented the organization’s federally contracted, national public education program. My strategic communications plan won honorable mention in the public service category of PR News 2012 Nonprofit Awards. Accomplishments include:

  • Media outreach that secured thousands of national and regional news placements. Notable media placements include: the Today show, The Early Show, The Associated Press, The Boston Globe, the Chicago Tribune, CBS News, The Weather Channel and National Public Radio.
  • TV and radio PSAs that secured donated media placements valued at more than $11 million and won 2012 Silver and Bronze Telly Awards.
  • A social media strategy that won the 2012 PR Newswire Earnies Award for Best Outcome Based on Listening, Monitoring and Measurement for social media planning and execution.
  • A national exhibit and presentation schedule in which NDPA subject matter experts presented or exhibited at more than 50 distinct events, including annual conferences and conventions, with large gatherings of key health and safety influencers.

In January 2014 I put aside my public relations consulting business to accept a position as communications director at Stroud Water Research Center. During the nearly two years at Stroud Center my accomplishments include:

  • Developed and implemented a strategic communications plan.
  • Media relations strategies and tactics that significantly increased news and feature articles about the organization.
  • Improved the appearance and readability of the annual report.
  • Improved and increased the publishing frequency of its UpStream newsletter.
  • Substantially grew the organization’s Twitter following from 27 followers to nearly 1,000.
  • Developed a coordinated exhibit display.
  • Exhibited on behalf of Stroud Center at the Society of Environmental Journalists Conference and American Association for the Advancement of Science.
  • Developed a strategy for adding an Instagram and Periscope channel
  • Served as staff photojournalist so that media releases, newsletter articles and collateral pieces are attractively illustrated.

I left my position at Stroud Center in October 2015 to resume my solo public relations consulting practice.

Other organizations I have worked with include the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters and The Compassionate Friends.

Experienced in Health and Safety Communications

Prior to starting my public relations consulting business, I worked as a developmental editor and project manager for a multi-national medical publishing company. My clients included hospitals, hospital networks, managed care organizations, and the American Red Cross. I developed and managed several custom quarterly newsletters, developed web content and wrote many articles focused on patient education and health management. I also developed a series of award-winning consumer health and safety books for the American Red Cross.

Media Relations from a Journalist’s Point of View

My approach to media relations and story writing is informed by 15 years of experience as a professional journalist. I have been a newspaper copy editor, staff writer, news correspondent and a freelance magazine writer. Editors often praise my crisp, creative writing style and strong news sense. Because I know how editor’s think, I craft  media pitches that are relevant, timely and focused on the human element of a story.

As part of my commitment to delivering high-quality public relations counsel to clients, I pursue ongoing professional development through active membership in the Public Relations Society of America. This means clients always benefit from my accumulated knowledge of industry best practices.

In addition to my accreditation in public relations, I holds an M.A. in journalism from Penn State University and a B.A. in English from Arcadia University.
